The worst roads will be the M25, the M5 between Bristol and Weston-super-Mare and the M6 around Birmingham.

Long delays are also expected on the M1 northbound from Luton and on the M60 and M62 in North West England.

Other transport hubs include the M4 and M27 in Hampshire.

The AA urges drivers to check their cars before driving.

First, drivers should make sure they have a full tank in case they get stuck in traffic.

It’s also worth checking oil and coolant levels before heading out, as the last thing you want to do is break down during peak hours.

And as a safety precaution, it is essential in wintry conditions to ensure your windscreen washer is refilled and your tires are properly inflated.

Getting caught with a dirty windshield or under-inflated tires can result in hefty fines.

AA President Edmund King said: “While December 23 and Christmas Eve are expected to be the busiest days, planned industrial action by railway staff could result in an increased number of cars on our roads.

“Our expert patrols will be working throughout the holiday season to fix struggling cars while also helping drivers should they be involved in an accident.

“Many breakdowns are preventable, so it is very important that you check your vehicle before driving.”
