2023 Australian International Academy Awards nominations

2023 Australian International Academy Awards nominations

The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once each received six leading nominations for the 2023 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) International Awards. Both films were nominated for Best Picture alongside Avatar: The Way of Water, Elvis and Top Gun: Maverick.

This is the second year that these kudos span four TV categories. Australian hits “Heartbreak High” and “Mystery Road: Origin” took home Best Drama Series awards alongside Emmy favorites “Severance” and “Stranger Things” and Newcomer FX’s “The Bear.” Defending champion “The White Lotus” went up against “Hacks”, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”, “Only Murders in the Building” and “Wednesday” for best comedy series of the second season in Sicily.

AACTA launched its international film awards a decade ago to give Australian filmmakers and artists a voice in the run-up to the Oscars. While the Australian academy is somewhat prescient about which films and performers will win Oscars, voters here prefer local talent.

The second round of voting is currently open and will close mid-next week. The winners are scheduled to be announced on Thursday, February 23, 2023 in Los Angeles. The winners are chosen from around 150 Australian filmmakers and around half of these voters cast ballots for the Academy Awards and BAFTAs, and their list also includes members of the Screen Actors Guild and the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., which awards the Golden Globe Awards.
