Paul Merson believes the Premier League title is “an arsenal to throw away” after the Gunners beat Tottenham 2-0 in Sunday’s north London derby.

A Hugo Lloris own goal and a long-range shot from Martin Odegaard gave Mikel Arteta’s side a crucial win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Arsenal moved up to an eight-point lead at the top of the table.

The Gunners have a crucial clash with Manchester United next Sunday in the Emirates, who are nine points behind them in fourth place behind Manchester City and Newcastle.

And Merson is confident Arsenal “will not be stopped” if they beat the Red Devils next weekend.

‘It’s all coming down to next Sunday. I think the game is next Sunday,” he told Sky Sports.

“I think if Manchester United (Crystal) Palace beat them away, which I expect from them the way they play, they go to the Emirates and I think if Man United win that game they’ll be three points behind Arsenal.

“But if Arsenal win that game Man United are not in the equation and it is Man City who are chasing them and they are eight maybe more points behind Arsenal. Now Arsenal have to throw it away.

“There are still a lot of points to go but that first-half performance was like watching Man City.

“If you lived in New Zealand and you hadn’t seen football for the last four years and they played in light blue you would have thought they were Man City. That’s how good they were. They win next week and I don’t see them being stopped.

Manchester City meet Spurs at the Etihad on Thursday and would close the gap to five points should Pep Guardiola’s side return to winning ways.
