Under the lights of Sixfields it was third against seventh as Northampton Town took on Carlisle United in a hastily rearranged midweek game after Saturday’s postponement.

Marc Leonard and Louis Appere joined the Cobblers starting XI, while the bench was bolstered by the return of Tyler Magloire and recent signing Josh Harrop. Jack Sowerby was absent through illness while Mitch Pinnock, who was also affected by an illness virus, was named as a substitute.

Ryan Edmondson, on loan at Sixfields for the second half of the 2020/21 season, narrowly missed an early chance for Carlisle, with the Cobblers’ first real shot on target being a deflected effort by Kieron Bowie.

At the start of the game neither side had played more than two weeks and clear chances proved difficult in a tight first half, but just over five minutes before the break Tomas Holy made a good save to repel a low shot from Sam Hoskins after some good work below right by Bowie.

The Cobblers started the second half with front foot, but it was Carlisle who made the breakthrough. JackArmer Shot home after a goalmouth scramble, the goal given for offside despite strong appeals.

The Cumbrians’ lead was short-lived, however, Sam Sherring on the way home from a Hoskins corner.

Louis Appere then had a chance to put the Cobblers ahead but couldn’t save his shot. However, he soon made amends with a commanding finish into the bottom corner to turn the goal line on its head.

As the Cobblers looked for a third goal to try and end the game, Paul Huntington made a great tackle to prevent Bowie from firing a shot after an excellent preseason game from Marc Leonard.

Shaun McWilliams made way for Mitch Pinnock in Jon Brady’s first substitution before a superb defense against Sherring denied Cumbrians substitute Tobi Sho-Silva.

Sho-Silva had the ball in the net from a corner but the offside flag was already up and the Cobblers went on to see eight minutes of added time to take all three points.
