The 33-year-old is a free agent after ending his spell at Qatari club Al Sadd, making him available after the January transfer window closes.
Everton are said to have been keen to bring him in to bolster their attacking options after a winter window in which they were the only Premier League side not to make a signing.
The Toffees thought they had loaned out Dutch winger Arnaut Danjuma from Villarreal but that deal fell through when he left for Tottenham despite passing a medical with the Merseyside squad.
Everton are currently in a relegation battle and are the least team with three wins in 19th place in the table.
Frank Lampard was relieved of his duties in early January after a poor start to the season when longtime Burnley boss Sean Dyche was named to replace him.
Dyche has also been linked with five-time Champions League winner Isco as another free agent as he attempts to reverse the club’s downward trend.

However, that will not have helped if Forest have beaten a player as the newly promoted side sit six points and six places above them in the Premier League.
