Sherburn Hungate Primary School is currently one of two schools in Sherburn-in-Elmet and in 2021 the school underwent a significant expansion to accommodate up to 450 pupils.

British Gypsum has worked with the school for a number of years, volunteering and providing donations to support its growth. Most recently, they created a space for students to explore nature and transformed an unusable area into a natural sensory garden.

Martyn Broom, School Principal at Sherburn Hungate, said: “British Gypsum has been of great support to us over the last few years, helping us with donations and manpower to provide our young people with an excellent education. The recent donation of £5000 has had an incredible impact on our students.

“By investing in quality reading material, we have made our brand new library a wonderful learning opportunity for all children. British Gypsum has had a major impact on children’s reading appetite and for that we will forever be grateful.”

John Day, Plant Manager at British Gypsum’s Sherburn site, said: “We are delighted to have contributed to a better learning experience for children in the Sherburn community and hope this will encourage them to read more – not only during their school years, but also during their free time at school as well.

“We aim to be good neighbors to the people who live near our manufacturing facilities and it is important to us to leave a positive legacy, now and for future generations. We are passionate about investing in our local communities and will continue to support Sherburn Hungate Primary School as it grows.”
