Newcastle United supporters can be forgiven for thinking they’re on cloud nine. They’ve had an absolute rift this season and that goes for both the Premier League and League Cup. Eddie Howe has got this team playing as one for the first time in what feels like forever and it’s hard not to be excited about what the Magpies could achieve by the end of May.
After beating Tranmere in the second round in August, the Magpies needed a penalty shootout to get past Crystal Palace. They then played out a thrilling 1-0 win over Bournemouth and in the quarter-finals they defeated Leicester 2-0 to take a step closer to the home of English football. Last week, in the first leg of that clash, it was a goal from Joelinton that gave them the narrow advantage.

Southampton are really flirting with the relegation zone for the first time in years. While there is still a long way to go in the Premier League season, there’s just no denying the Saints are in trouble. However, one of the highlights for them so far this season has been their cup form – and if they play smart they could easily close the deficit they have accumulated on the south coast.
The Saints stormed through Cambridge in August to get through the second round, but in the third they went on penalties to defeat Sheffield Wednesday. They beat a very impressive Lincoln team 2-1, with their most impressive showing coming in the quarterfinals when they beat Manchester City. In the first leg of the semifinals they went down to 10 men and suffered a 1-0 defeat.
Conclusion
With Tyneside rebounding and an elusive place in a cup final at stake, we can’t see anything but Newcastle United win that game to cement their place in the big dance. We’re expecting some tense altercations early on, with Howe’s men eventually taking the lead before half-time.
Southampton will be forced to come out and play, which is rarely a problem for them in a cup climate. Unfortunately, they just won’t be able to handle the physicality presented to them.
The hosts score again in the second half to make it 2-0 and 3-0 overall. For the remainder of the evening, they are serenaded by the fans, eventually setting them on the path to full-time whistling and their biggest game in years.
