Space-based Maritime Surveillance

Space-based Maritime Surveillance

The growing multipolar world, types of threats and distances from which such threats may emanate, contested waters and maritime control zones of different nations require greater and constant vigilance of the oceans through maritime surveillance.

NEW YORK, Jan. 30, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — announces the release of the report, Space-based Maritime Surveillance –
Marine surveillance is carried out using terrestrial radar, automatic identification systems (AIS), earth observation systems (EO) and other passive sensor systems; Naval and Coast Guard vessel surveillance systems; and air surveillance systems.

It is expensive, scarce and the limitations of these resources have created large gaps that create opportunities for space-based maritime surveillance. In the satellite industry, the trend is towards smaller, cheaper, more durable, easily replaceable and digitally twin-enabled remote sensing devices for cheaper and more effective ocean surveillance.

In addition, advances in information technologies with machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics have and will enable more on-demand and real-time space-based solutions for ocean surveillance. The market for space-based marine surveillance, valued at more than $1 billion, is expected to grow at approximately 6% through 2030, with North America, Europe and APAC accounting for the largest share.

Almost 35% of market opportunities in 2030 will arise from security and law enforcement needs.

The study shows growth opportunities in remote sensing for space-based maritime surveillance.

These opportunities come from creating cost-effective digital twin technology-based solutions that provide a real-time and on-demand picture of the maritime surface for rapid response and enhanced decision support.
