Shocking images show the wreckage after a driver pulled into a child’s bedroom just minutes after toddlers left.

The car hurled debris over Little Rainbows Day Nursery in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, as parents put their child in a vehicle.

Joanne Alvy, 36, who runs the nursery with her husband Simon, 46, said they were “devastated” by the crash, which took place around 5.50pm on Monday.

Police arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of being unfit to drive and he has since been released under investigation.

Ms Alvy said she was relieved no one was hurt in the incident but added it was difficult to see her shop – which has 117 young children enrolled – suffering just before Christmas.

The mother-of-two said: “It happened around 5.50pm. The last child had just left the building. His parents were literally in the parking lot getting into their car when it happened.

“The driver basically lost control and then went over the grass which slowed him down a bit and then managed to hit a corner section of the wall.

“The corner of the children’s room had completely collapsed. This removed the radiator from the wall so there was water everywhere. There was just a huge hole in the wall.”

Ms Alvy, who lives next door to the daycare, said staff ran to her door after the car plowed into the wall.

She added: “We have received offers of support from families who have access to the nursery and other nurseries have offered support and help with childcare.

“Even our local MP’s office has offered us support.

“But it’s devastating. It’s been such a tough few years, especially with COVID. It was really, really hard.

“That this happens is an absolutely heavy blow. But we will come back fighting. We’ll fix it and open the doors.”

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “At 6.01pm [on Monday] Police received a report of a vehicle colliding with a brick wall on Halifax Road, Liversedge.

“Officials attended and found that the collision had damaged the wall of a building.

“No injuries were reported.

“A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of unfit driving and remains in custody while the investigation continues.

“Structural engineers have been notified and the vehicle has been recovered for examination.”

They later added: “The arrested man was released as part of the investigation.”
